The Ninth Legion

An SCA War Band

http://www.ninthlegion.org

Who we are.

We are a Warband and a Household within the SCA. We recreate the great legionaries of Rome in the second century AD. We make an attempt to be as historically accurate as possible within the rules of the SCA. We strive for a uniform military appearance on the battlefield and encourage the same in our camp.

The Ninth Legion Way.

We fight together, we camp together, we party together. In our camp everyone participates. Everyone pitching in makes camp life a lot easier. We take pride in putting up an impressive encampment and we want our members to share in that pride.

We are Roman on the battlefield. After the fighting you can dress in any period you want, we just encourage you to do it right. Many of our members prefer first century Celtic garb. A lot of the ladies in our group like Middle Eastern garb for belly dancing.

We are a family environment. Some of us have families and kids and most of us consider each other as extended family. But we are a family that does know how to throw a good party. We just ask a certain amount of respect for each other.

How important is accuracy?

It is too much work for most of us to be 100% historically accurate. So we have an accuracy rule we call the 90/10 rule. We are 90% accurate at 10 feet. Some of the things this entails is the hiding of the SCA required armor like knee cops and elbows with a long sleave tunic or shorts that cover the knees. We do use modern materials that are easier to maintain, like stainless steel for our Lorica Segmentata's. The little things we do to improve our appearance actually gives us a tactical advantage on the battlefield. If we look better then the enemy, the enemy will think we are better. At that point we have already won half the battle.

Our battlefield command.

We have a rotating command structure in which any active fighting member may participate. Our Centurio (commander) is elected by the soldiers once a year. Any soldier may run once he or she owns all their own armor and has been fighting with us for at least 3 years.

Our Uniform and Gear.

We help all soldiers new to the group arm up through a kind of apprenticeship. One of the senior members will show you how we make the gear. Once you learn how you can pass it down to new members.

Because you help with the labor of making the armor, we only charge new soldiers the cost of materials. This makes it a lot cheaper then buying the armor from a armorer. If really dedicated you could have a complete kit in 2 months or sooner. Usually while you are building your armor we will be able to loan you some of the gear you are missing so you can get out on the field sooner.
